National PBC

The Padmasambhava Buddhist Center spreads the teachings of Buddhism according to the Nyingma school lineage of Tibet. The Center was first established in New York in 1989 by Ven. Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche with the encouragement of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. Khenchen Palden and Khenpo Tsewang, known informally as "the Khenpos," are the teachers and spiritual leaders of the PBC. They also direct the activities of the New York Center, its many branches in the U.S.A., Puerto Rico and Russia, and its retreat center Padma Samye Ling in upstate New York. Some of the PBC’s many projects include the following:

Padma Samye Ling Retreat Center is the PBC’s primary institution in the US, located in Delaware County on five hundred acres of forest near the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. It offers a formal temple highlighted by traditional murals, a large scholastic library, museum, and study room, as well as dormitories and sangha house with kithcen and dining facilities. The retreat center hosts group, personal, and work retreats throughout the year.

Padma Samye Chokhor Ling is situated in the holy city of Sarnath, Varanasi, India, where the Buddha gave his first teaching on the Four Arya Truths. A traditional monastery and retreat center, it is home to 20 monks from Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan, ranging in age from 9 to 30. The education of the monks consists of learning the basics of reading, writing, and grammar, as well as the study of philosophical texts.

Orgyen Samye Chokhor Ling is the first Buddhist nunnery at historic Deer Park in Sarnath. Opened in March 2003, it reflects the Venerable Khenpos’ commitment to provide equal education opportunities for both women and men. The nunnery now houses 10 nuns from Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkhim, ranging in age from 14 through the mid 30s. The education of nuns is very similar to that of the monks. They first begin with the basics; reading, writing, and learning chants. They all receive a solid academic foundation including grammar, art, and English, as well as philosophy and the principles of the Bodhisattva life.

The Miracle Stupa at Padme Samye Jetvan was dedicated in 2004. It is located in Jetavan Grove in Shravasti, India, where Buddha Shakyamuniresided and taught for 24 years during the rainy season and performed many miracles. Rising 100 feet into the sky, the Great Miracle Stupa commemorates Lord Buddha’s activities in this auspicious location and is a pilgrimage and practice site for many Indians and tourists.

Learning Dharma Skills Program at Padma Samye Ling, NY

The Learning Dharma Skills Program has been created to facilitate the compassionate vision of international sangha and friends, both to preserve Padma Samye Ling (PSL) as a center of study and practice, and to reflect their devotion to the Venerable Khenpo Rinpoches’ mandala and lineage.

Padma Samye Ling monastery is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist retreat center devoted to Dharma service, meditation, and community living. This beautiful mandala sits at 2,000 feet on 500 acres of pristine countryside. It reflects the glorious vision of our spiritual directors, Venerable Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Venerable Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche, to establish a living community that fosters world peace.

Program participants are invited to join in all retreats and teaching programs at PSL, partake in annual language courses, enjoy our beautiful temple with traditional Tibetan architecture and mural paintings, study in the Shantarakshita library, and delight in the breathtaking views and scenic trails of our flourishing retreat environment.
